LUIS MORAIS prides itself in using all natural materials, with that I mind some care is necessary. Like any piece of fine jewelry a simple rule should be followed: Jewelry is the last thing you put on before heading out and the first thing you take off when you get home. Following this simple rule will preserve the look and grant longevity for all your fine pieces and collectibles. Water is not the enemy but the chemicals in the water are, they can dry natural materials, removing their natural oils and finishes. Chlorines, Sulfates and lyes have been known to strip leathers and wood, tarnish silver and slowly eat gold.
Ebony…
Valued form ancient times, is hard and dark; it is extensively used for piano keys and in cabinetmaking, especially the black Macassar ebony of India and the East Indies. Ebony jewelry should be cared for as any piece of fine ebony furnishing. Water will not destroy this hard wood, but will dry its natural oil and remove the wax coating placed at the factory. To replenish its dark natural color use a light clear wood oil and wipe dry. Dark stain oils are not necessary and could stain your clothing.
Sandalwood…
Santalum (family santalaceae; the sandalwood family) , used in making furniture and from which oil is used in making perfumes, soaps, candles and incense; is al light colored wood varying from rich golden beige to light orange brown. Sandalwood is scented wood whose oil over time will wear. These beads should NEVER be directly oiled, they absorb the oil they require from your skin. This wood truly takes on the personality and sent of its host over time.
Fossilized mammoth ivory…
The second major source worldwide, the “dead” ivory, as it is called, was taken from the remains of extinct mammoths found in Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. This legal source of ivory is harder to work with and more brittle then “living “ivory. This ivory just like sandalwood absorbs the oils and even the color of the wearer’s skin over time. Many times this reaction is referred as the “patina”, a desired effect in ivory jewelry. Each wearer makes his or her piece unique over time.
Rubber and Strings…
Not only fun, colorful and the new punk chic, but water resistant; the perfect piece for the wearer that loves the sun and surf or a quick dip in the Jacuzzi. Still the same care for gold and diamonds come into play, with a little more freedom.
